Plagiarism. What is it and is it worth plagiarizing?
In the information and internet age, the issue of intellectual property protection is becoming increasingly relevant. Nowadays it is very easy to find information, so many students have a desire to go the simple way and just copy a few computer keys. However, in the academic community, the use and presentation of information as one’s own is a very serious offense. “Plagiarism is the assimilation of all or part of the authorship of a science, literature, art work, discovery, invention, or rationalization.” Plagiarism of work is considered a manifestation of a student’s dishonesty and violation of academic ethics. In order to avoid this, electronic work plagiarism checking systems are being developed and applied. They compare the text you have provided with the texts in the database and determine whether the work contains plagiarism.
There are several ways to plagiarize information:
Written work or a part of it is written by rewriting the work of another author, absorbing his thoughts and presenting himself as his own. Plagiarism text will be stored if you do not specify the source of the information and you will not separate the text in quotation marks. So, with the help of other authors, do not forget to put them in quotation marks, give clear references to the quoted original.
Incorrect paraphrasing. Presentation of rephrased information without indicating source. Improved electronic plagiarism checking systems recognize even paraphrased text. So, despite changing the order of words or sentences, it is still necessary to indicate the author of the thought. Since this is no longer a quote, no quotes are required.
Invalid citation – Providing tables or other visuals without indicating the source. Links are not provided unless the material on the table or chart is collected and processed by the author of the study. In all other cases it is mandatory to indicate where the tables are taken.
Copying your previous texts – writing down yourself, i.e. using parts of your previous works without providing links. Despite the fact that the authorship of the thoughts used belongs to you, the plagiarism checking system will still find and link your previously written works to the new one. So, even if you quote your own bachelor’s thesis in your master’s thesis, mark it out by quoting quotes and referring to the sources.
Each university uses a plagiarism check system, and it is up to the student to decide whether to consider plagiarism or self-employment as a plagiarism. By agreeing that the work cannot be considered as independent, the student is not allowed to defend it and the penalties provided for in the university study regulations are imposed. For example, the study regulations of both Vilnius University and Mykolas Romeris University provide that a student for plagiarism is expelled from the university.
Not always, the university rules clearly state what the amount of the text absorbed is to keep the work plagiarism.
For example, at Vilnius University, a special commission decides whether to consider plagiarism or not. The regulations of Mykolas Romeris University specifically state that plagiarism is considered to be a work in which the literary text of another author is used without specifying the source or specifying it, but without quoting the text in quotation marks. Pleated text occupies more than half of the page, i.e. about 900 characters (including spaces). Properly paraphrasing the text and not specifying the source of the plagiarism is considered to be the work if there is more than one page, i.e. 1800 characters (including spaces).

Having evaluated all the above information, you probably already understand that plagiarism is not advisable for the final thesis or parts of it. There are many different types of plagiarism screening systems that cannot be cheated. In addition, the final thesis obtained at any university is subject to compulsory screening for plagiarism. Therefore, getting away is almost guaranteed to fail.
